135 kg of meth seized in Tamil Nadu; ruling-party official arrested

On Oct 16, 2026, officers of India's Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI, Tiruchy zone) searched homes in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. The Hindu reports 135 kg of methamphetamine was seized from the house of an associate; the Times of India and the New Indian Express report more than 100 kg. N. Boopalan (also spelled Boobalan), 42, an advocate and a district executive committee member of the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, was arrested, and three associates were detained (the New Indian Express names them). Reports say the drugs were meant to be smuggled to Sri Lanka. TVK expelled Boopalan. NDTV says the DRI has issued no official statement, so the quantity is as reported.
