What happened
Gilmore was sentenced to death for the July 20, 1976 murder of Bennie Bushnell in Provo. He pressed for his sentence to be carried out rather than pursue appeals, and the execution was stayed three times. In the early hours of January 17, 1977, a federal appeals court in Denver overturned a restraining order, and he was executed that morning at Utah State Prison. It was the first execution in the United States since 1967, after the death penalty was reinstated in 1976.
