What happened

A jury convicted Broom on October 3, 1985 and he was sentenced to death; the sentence was affirmed on appeal in 1988. Ohio attempted to carry out the sentence on September 15, 2009 at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, but the attempt was called off after about two hours and he was returned to death row. He argued that a second attempt would be unconstitutional; on March 16, 2016 the Ohio Supreme Court ruled 4-3 that the state could try again. A new date was set for June 17, 2020, but Governor Mike DeWine issued a reprieve on April 14, 2020 and reset it to March 16, 2022. Broom was never executed: he died on death row on December 28, 2020 of suspected COVID-19 complications.
