True-color image of Typhoon Champi made from NASA Terra satellite MODIS data and published on Wikimedia Commons; the file title dates the pass to Oct. 17, 2026 at 23:02 UTC (9:02 a.m. Oct. 18 Guam time), after the storm passed south of the island. Guam's Joint Information Center said Champi was upgraded to a super typhoon and made its closest approach at about 4:26 a.m. on Oct. 18, passing about 10 miles south of Merizo, with southern Guam taking the brunt of the winds. The JIC said President Trump approved Governor Lou Leon Guerrero's request for an emergency declaration the same morning.
