Photo released Oct. 18, 2026 by the South African Police Service (SAPS) showing an AK-47 rifle lying in grass, which SAPS says its Tactical Response Team recovered after an operation at Mbulawa Location, Mqanduli, Eastern Cape on Saturday, Oct. 17. SAPS says that at about 14:30 a wanted murder suspect fled officers along the R411 towards Coffee Bay, pointed a firearm at the police vehicle and was fatally shot when members returned fire; no officers were hurt, and the rifle's serial number had been filed off. SAPS says the dead man was a person of interest in a Thafalehashe murder case and in the killing of a police officer at Eziko Tavern, Mqanduli, and that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) will investigate the shooting.
